Most of us learn history through grand narratives; one great event after another, influential leaders, and a series of socio-economic processes which are meant to help us understand where we fit into a grander narrative of global continuity. What if we alternatively focus on the personal and daily practices which have shaped us? Would this challenge our current beliefs on the past; could it illuminate what truly matters to us?

itanola is interested in ‘regular’ people, the mundane, and the complex. We tell stories that show joy, suffering, remember the forgotten, and reveal the hidden. With your attention and shares; we can continue to give provide production quality, research depth, and stories that matter. Through this, we aim to be funded by people who believe that local journalism and it’s historical preservation are worth investing in.

So, what will be of these stories in 5, 15, or 25 years time? We’re always thinking about this. We hope every oral history we record, documentary we produce, and data investigation contributes to building an archive that will act as a bridge between storytelling on the present and history-making for the future. A place where stories – told and owned by individuals and local communities – are preserved, protected, and accessible to anyone, anywhere who relates to them.

for hi(stories) – telling today’s stories, and thus shaping tomorrow’s histories.
